Four Questions That Will Help You Define Your Style
You do not need to have a design degree to have great taste. But when it comes time to renovate or decorate, many people feel stuck trying to describe their style. Do you like modern or classic? Do you want minimal or cozy? What actually feels like you?
Here are four simple questions we ask clients to help clarify what they really want in their space:
What do you want the space to feel like
Not what do you want it to look like. What do you want to feel when you walk in. Calm. Warm. Clean. Energized. This is one of the most important questions because it tells us more than any photo ever could.
What do you naturally live with
Look at the clothes you wear or the objects you have held onto for years. Are they bold and colourful or soft and neutral. Sleek or textured. Your everyday choices often point to your design instincts more than any trend board can.
What do you want to avoid
Sometimes knowing what you do not like is just as helpful as knowing what you do. Maybe you hate clutter. Maybe you cannot stand shiny tile. Maybe you are over all white everything. These details help guide every decision moving forward.
What spaces have made you feel at home
Think of a place where you felt relaxed and at ease. It could be a friend’s cottage or a hotel you loved or even your grandmother’s kitchen. What stood out about that space. What would you borrow from it. Real memories can be more useful than inspiration photos.
You do not have to fit into one design box. The goal is not to label your style. It is to create a home that reflects how you live and how you want to feel every day. These four questions are a great place to start.
